The freshwater that we see is relatively scarce. Out of this 2.5% freshwater, only 1% is accessible as the rest is trapped in snowfields and glaciers. The scarcity of water comes with the low availability of freshwater. This is escalated by water pollution caused by humans. The only solution to <strong>save water <\/strong>is <strong>rainwater harvesting.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rainwater\nharvesting<\/strong> does not require energy resources for it to\nfunction and hence is the best sustainable solution. This can be your\ncourtyard, open ground, or terrace. This storage tank is\ndesigned by keeping in mind the rainfall, water requirements, and catchment\navailability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drain pipe or collecting system should\nhave:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A filter at the mouth of the pipe.<\/li><li>A roof washer will divert the\nfirst flow away from the tank.<\/li><li>An excess water overflow system.<\/li><li>An air gap so that stormwater\nbackflow can be prevented.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rainwater harvesting<\/strong> not only <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.propertypistol.com\/blog\/simple-tips-that-can-save-gallons-of-water\/\">saves water<\/a> <\/strong>but also saves energy that is required while transporting and distributing the water at the doorstep. Many times, groundwater is extracted to meet the demand of freshwater, harvesting rainwater conserves the groundwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Features_in_the_system\"><\/span><strong>Features in the system<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>First flush diverters: This device is used to flush off the contaminated water received from the first showers. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Filters: After the first flush, it is essential to pass the water through the filters. These filters prevent dust, silt, leaves, and other things to enter the storage tank.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Check for contamination: One\nshould ensure if the catchment is absolutely suitable for collecting the water.\nTrim any overhanging vegetation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Installing_the_tanks_and_pipes\"><\/span><strong>Installing the tanks and pipes<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>For installing pipes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Take permission from the\nauthorities before doing so.<\/li><li>If laid underground, dig trenches.<\/li><li>In order to avoid the collection\nof sediments, have the pipe as a single fall.<\/li><li>Ensure to lay the pipes in the\ntrenches or connect them using connectors.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For installing Tanks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make a tank stand according to\nyour building.<\/li><li>Place the tanks on the stand and\nensure they are sturdy.<\/li><li>Connect these tanks and install a\nvalve for maintenance purposes.<\/li><li>Install the first flush diverters\nand filters.<\/li><li>Make an arrangement in case of\noverflow.<\/li><li>A tank gauge can monitor your\nusage.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For installing pumps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In order to distribute the water, use a pump for watering the garden.<\/li><li>Ensure the pump is of the right size.<\/li><li>By using pressure couplings, maintain adequate pressure.<\/li><li>Check if the entire system works and if the water flows into the tanks.<\/li><li>Prevent any algae growth.<\/li><li>To block the sunlight, install a solar shield.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rainwater harvesting<\/strong> has proven to be a solution to a lot of water problems faced in Mumbai and its suburbs.
