All about the Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate

Considering worldwide pollutant emissions on the increase, governments have been obliged to establish automotive emission limits. To meet the government’s pollution regulations, almost all vehicles and motorbikes registered in India must pass emission testing. As a result, you must obtain your vehicle’s PUC Certificate. PUC stands for Pollution Under Control.

What exactly is a PUC Certificate?

A Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUC Certificate) certifies that a vehicle’s emissions are under control and meet pollution standards. The government issues the document following a comprehensive evaluation of the vehicle’s emissions level.

A PUC certificate, including a registration certificate, a motor insurance policy, and a driving licence, is now needed to be carried when driving under the Motor Vehicle Act.

What is the purpose of requiring a PUC certificate?

Aside from following traffic regulations, an emission certificate is essential for a few significant reasons:

  • As required by law

A vehicle must have a Pollution Certificate, that must be maintained when it expires, according to the Central Motor Vehicles Act of 1989. If you do not comply with this, you may face sanctions from both the traffic police and the Regional Transport Authorities (RTOs). PUCs are government-issued certifications that your vehicle’s emissions levels are below acceptable limits.

  • To reduce pollution

Excessive emissions from motor vehicles may be hazardous to the environment and people’s health. As a result, every person is required to abide by the government’s pollution standards for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers. A PUC certificate or an emission test assures that automobiles do not exceed allowable pollutant concentrations.

What are the expenses and validity of PUC certificates?

You should be informed of the validity and cost of your vehicle’s PUC.

  • For a new automobile or motorcycle, a PUC certificate is valid for one year. You must update it continuously.
  • The new certificate is good for six months for both vehicles and motorcycles. If the PUC test results in a negative result, the certificate’s validity will be judged by that result.
  • If a vehicle emits more CO2 than the allowable limit, the testing centre will inform the RTO, Deputy RTO, and Assistant RTO within one working day.

PUC examination procedure

The engine is completely pushed in diesel automobiles, and pollutant levels are measured. Five measurements are obtained, and the average is calculated.

Unlike diesel cars, gasoline vehicles may idle without pressing the accelerator. This reading is the outcome.
